Saudi fights compatriots’ derision and makes it to US TV by ARAB NEWS

WASHINGTON: “Your face is not that of an anchorwoman.” This is what Saudi scholarship student in the United States Malak Al-Dawood first heard. However, it is also what made her work harder and become a television reporter on one of the American satellite channels, MT10 news.
She also presents programs on UIndy TV, where other students also work.
Al-Dawood left the Eastern Province for the US, and completed her secondary schooling with excellent grades. She is now specializing in media and television and expects to complete her studies in the middle of next year.
She said study and life in the US is generally exciting. “Every day I learn something new in my studies and personality and I feel being away is a school by itself.”
She said it was difficult in the beginning especially concerning the English language, but the rest of the students helped her in how to read news.
Al-Dawood said she learned much from her experiences and made many friends. “It was also distinguished by the fact that I am a Saudi wearing a hijab and the fact is that the hijab actually adds a distinctive touch, and I have become a symbol among students.”
She said at first other Saudi scholarship students made fun of her on social media websites. “The criticisms they made were harsh at first, and I intended to go back to Saudi Arabia but it was my sister who encouraged me to stay.”
She said it was in that first week that “I reported on the university channel and was accepted as the ‘first hijabed Saudi’, and felt very happy.”
She said she no longer cared what people said and was looking forward to a great future.
